UN chief Guterres to arrive in Bangladesh on Thursday

4-day tour includes visit to Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is set to arrive in Dhaka, Bangladesh on Thursday on a four-day official visit, with the Rohingya issue high on the agenda.

He will meet the interim government head Muhammad Yunus, top diplomats, civil society leaders and also travel to Cox’s Bazar, which hosts 1.2 million Rohingya who fled persecution in Myanmar, for iftar, the fast-breaking meal, with around 100,000 refugees on Friday.

Along with Yunus, he is expected to interact with Rohingya community leaders, youth and children.

Guterres on Saturday will visit the UN office in Dhaka and later hold a meeting with the National Consensus Commission, a government initiative to reach political consensus in Bangladesh, and civil society. He will also address a news conference.

Guterres will leave on Sunday.

This will be his second visit to Bangladesh after the last one in 2018. The government says the UN chief’s visit could bring the Rohingya crisis back to the global agenda.
