British Prime Minister Andy Burnham will host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in London for talks later Wednesday, as the premier vowed that the Ukrainian leader “won’t be going away from Britain today empty-handed.”
Burnham will hold talks with Zelenskyy at Downing Street on Wednesday afternoon, with the British premier expected to set out how his government will draw up further sanctions against Russia.
The visit is the Ukrainian president’s second to the UK since Burnham became prime minister.
It comes after US President Donald Trump said Sunday that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an “energy ceasefire,” while the US faces growing backlash over plans to import diesel from Moscow.
“I’m looking very much now at my meeting with President Zelensky in a couple of hours,” Burnham told lawmakers in the House of Commons earlier Wednesday.
Recalling his call with the Ukrainian leader on Saturday, Burnham said he recognized that it was “another very dark and difficult moment for him,” as they contemplate a winter that will be severe for his people.
He added: “I recognize that he is carrying the heaviest of weights right now, and it is extremely difficult for him.”
Burnham also reiterated the UK’s commitment to Ukraine.
“I will listen to President Zelensky carefully, but he won’t be going away from Britain today empty-handed,” the prime minister added.
Upon his arrival, Zelenskyy said he would have an audience with Britain’s King Charles and an “important meeting” with Burnham.
“We will discuss a wide range of security issues. We are preparing decisions that will strengthen us,” he wrote on US social media company X.
